A shark has just caused Hawaii’s first shark fatality for the year on the island of Maui. The attack happened south of Wailea and Makena beaches at the amazing snorkeling spot – Kanahena Cove, part of Ahi’i Kinau Natural Reserve.
A 65-year-old woman was likely killed by a shark while snorkeling with two friends she got separated from. This was Wednesday morning and we’re just getting news of it now, four days later for some reason.
The woman was found unresponsive and face down about two-hundred yards offshore by some other snorkelers in the area who were able to pull her in to the beach. Firefighters attempted CPR and other life-saving efforts, but were unsuccessful. The woman received bites to her upper torso.
This area is closed to all swimmers and anyone using the water – at this time until further notice.

I see dates on the comments but not the story. Is this the same incident that has also been reported as a husband & wife snorkling together?
No one mentions the Wisconsin man who disappeared a year ago south Maui. Found
snorkel, mask, and fin. We are swimming above a jungle, and it’s their ocean.
My favorite line on this topic is “When you go into the water, you join the food chain and you’re not at the top of it”
