I’m newly divorced, female, age 52 and next to nothing to my name. I need a fresh start and would like to make Maui my new home. I have been looking online but I just don’t see how I could possibly make this work. I do have a college degree in engineering from Purdue University. However, I have not worked in the industry since 1998. My current experience is in office management, purchasing, etc. What kind of work could I find, salary, hours, what would be my expenses from housing, insurance, living and what overall advice to you have for me. I also have a high school aged daughter. What are the schools like. Thanks!
Short answer: financially: double your expenses and cut your average pay over the past 2 year by 30% and see if that works. Save enough to have 6 months to live with no job. Be prepared to put your daughter through hell if you can’t afford a private school at about $20k/year.
Either that or throw all caution to the wind and prepare for the wildest, roughest, toughest ride of your life.
My daughter is 12, will be in 7th grade this fall. We have a job offer in Hilo and am super excited to move to Hawaii however my children and the quality of life we offer them is utmost important to me. I am afraid she will suffer as a Haole, I am afraid she won’t have the same opportunities we have here. She is in public school for first time in 6th grade. Public school system where I am is great. She is excelling. I want her to succeed. She is smart and above average for sure. Can she successfully transition?
I am in healthcare and will have a stable job. we are a tight nit family. We lived in Hawaii (Honolulu) when she was 3-4 years old. We loved it then but she is making me rethink the potential of moving there as I do not want her to not have the same opportunities or lack of potential. She is focused on her social world at this time in her life.
Thanks Peter

Hello Peter,
I have lived in Virginia practically my entire life and am ready for change. My boyfriend is moving to Hawaii as he visited earlier this year and fell in love with the island. I’ve never been, but seeing the pictures and videos I know I will love it. The thing I am nervous about is leaving my family behind as they are only a few hours away from me right now so I’d basically be leaving my entire support system behind and my boyfriend and I have gone through a breakup then got back together and facing some hardships lately that we are trying to work through. It’s a very big move for me and I would not just be moving for him, but for myself as well. I am fearful I will not get a job as my major is so broad (Communication studies major) and finances are around what you started with regarding savings. I also have loans to pay off too. Do you have any advice or feedback on a direction to go? Would Hawaii be a good move for me?
Thank you!
Aloha! Did you watch the video? Did you take the quiz? What do you think?
Aloha Peter, I lived on Maui for a few years 2008-2013. Single Mom with 3 adult boys and a 10 year old daughter. My daughter and I go back to Maui every year, it is home to us. We plan to move back to Maui this May. I will keep my house on the mainland and my oldest son will move in and take care of it for us. My daughter is in a wonderful private school here and that is my only concern right now with moving. I adopted her when she was 6 from a horrible situation and would like to move her from the memories here in this state. I do not like this state either we live in but the little family I have is here, although we do not see one another much as everyone is so busy. I quit my job this past week to get prepared to move in few months, selling things etc and house ready for my son and his 2 children. I guess I am a bit concerned about making the right decision just because we really do not know anyone there. I am a strong independent woman, enough monthly to live there but need some real sincere advice I guess. I will be finding work when I get to island. Feeling confused, Aloha for any help, support at all.
Thank you for the courage to share your story. It’s deeply moving. If I were you I would work very hard to mitigate what I think are your 2 biggest risks which are (A) adjusting to school for your daughter and (B) having a network of friends. Since you come to Maui every year you must have a sense of a neighborhood/school which will work for you and I can only advise that you be very clear of what you’re getting into as the public school system can be very harsh for a 10 yr old mainland kid. On B, I’d advise that you connect with people networks as much as possible, such as churches or other social groups. For the 2 of you I’d guess that connecting and replacing a new family (as I mentioned in the video) are key. Best of luck to you on your adventure!
Hi Peter…I just found you while researching Hawaii. Love your posts so far! Question for you…My husband and I ( 50 yrs old, newly empty nesters) have never been to Hawaii (we live in Wisconsin-so we tend to travel the Caribbean when searching warmth in the winters however many of our friends tell us we have to visit Hawaii….so we are! We are looking at Maui, Kauai & Hilo/Kona. We’d like to spend a month somewhere to see how we like island life.(April) We love nature, to be active outdoors, explore, hike, bike, kayak, SUP, farmers markets and Happy Hours! we don’t love big city stuff- high rises, golf courses, shopping malls, traffic, commercialism….Any chance you can give me your opinion on which island to choose? Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Tammy
